Slowing Down to Move Forward

Intentionally choosing to slow down

Some may argue that the Q4 season is the time to press hard on the gas, to close out the year strong with everything we’ve got. If that is you, do you boo! I’m not here to discourage your momentum… but if the Q4 push feels overwhelming, I promise it’s okay to slow it down and choose a different path this season. No one is holding a hammer to your head. Taking the time to pause and reflect gives us the clarity to see where we need to adjust, helping us move forward with intention.

I’ve been spending my time moving very slowly this year, reflecting on my new normal. My pace shifted in May after my nana passed away, then again in July after losing my stepfather. In a world that’s always on the go, grief pulled me back, forcing me to slow down. Slowing down isn’t always our choice, but sometimes it’s necessary for healing. Fresh grief can’t be rushed; the only way through it is to let it come as it will. This season has taught me that while it’s easy to feel like slowing down is a setback, it’s a step forward in disguise.

Rest: The Gift of Intentional Slowing Down

Slowing down is not a step back or a failure in life. It’s a way to reconnect with what is right in front of us. Too often, we’re chasing the next goal without ever taking the time to appreciate where we are now. Remember, there was once a time when you wished and prayed to be where you are today. Take a moment to pause and give gratitude before jumping to the next thing. When we allow ourselves intentional rest, we create space for new energy, creativity, and aligned goals. We’re not robots, so expecting the body to perform as one does not serve us.

If you’re unsure of how to make time for intentional rest, here are a few ways below

  • Set screen time limits to truly unwind
  • Embrace “no work” evenings to fully disconnect
  • Engage in active rest like nature walks
  • Schedule mini-breaks throughout your day as a moment to reset

Reflect to Recharge

As this year is slowly ending, it will also be jam-packed with holidays and perhaps deadlines at work. But before getting caught up in the chaos, set aside some time to reflect. Think about the goals you set earlier this year and the values that truly represent who you are or who you want to be. Reconnect with your inner self, and don’t be afraid to adjust or pivot if those goals no longer resonate. Pivoting is all about realigning to finish the year in a way that is true to you.

I’ve created a reflection worksheet with guided questions to help you on this journey. Think of it as a roadmap to close out the year with purpose.

Reclaim: From Reflection to Intentional Action

Now that you’ve paused to reflect, the next step is to reclaim control and set your sights on what really matters. Reclaiming is about letting go of anything that no longer serves you and making time for what does. When we make intentional choices, we can redefine our direction and focus on what truly brings us joy and purpose.

Here are some reminders to inspire your journey

If it drains your energy, let it go.
If it doesn’t spark joy, let it go.
If it doesn’t align with your goals, let it go.
If it feeds self-doubt, let it go.
If it overwhelms you, let it go.
If it pulls you away from your goals, let it go.

Letting go of what holds you back creates space for a life that truly reflects what matters to you. Taking back control is’nt just a practical choice, but a powerful act of self-care.

Moving Forward with Purpose and Balance

As we embrace this season of slowing down, remember that the path to growth and balance isn’t a race. Every step you take, big or small, is progress toward becoming the person you aspire to be. By choosing to rest, reflect, reclaim and release what no longer aligns, you’re setting yourself up for a fulfilling and intentional new year.

To help support you on the journey, I’ve created a free reflection worksheet with guided questions to help you close out the year with clarity and purpose. Download it, save it, and schedule time on your calendar (the sooner, the better!) to deeply reflect on the year and set your course for what is ahead.
